Storing:
Jewelry should be stored in separate compartments to prevent scratching.  Silver should be stored in a tarnish proof bag or cloth, preferably in a cool, dry place.  Pearls should be stored in a cloth bag, away from light, heat and moisture.

Keep jewelry boxes or storage furniture away from direct heat sources and light.  Avoid damp or humid areas when choosing a location for storage.

Cleaning:
Never clean your jewelry over the sink.  Use a bowl if possible, should a stone come out or you drop the jewelry retrieving it is better than replacing it.  If you must use the sink, cover the drain with a piece of cloth with a tight weave and inspect the jewelry carefully before releasing the water.

Always consider the most delicate part of your piece, before cleaning.  If you have a delicate stone, you will not want to expose it to a harsh cleaning treatment.

Pearls can be maintained by simply using a soft, damp cloth.  If they are in need of a deeper cleaning use a product specifically designed for pearls and delicate jewelry.  Allow them to fully dry before putting them away.

Sterling silver will tarnish over time, but can be cleaned easily with a silver jewelry cleaner.  Silver scratches easily, so use the softest cloth possible when polishing.

Take care when washing your hands while wearing rings and bracelets.  Soap can and does remain on the jewelry and in the crevices.  This will make it appear dull.  If possible remove jewelry before washing or clean jewelry in cleaning solution to remove excess soap.

Care:
At least once a year have your stone settings inspected by a qualified jeweler.  Prongs may be worn down or settings damaged which may cause the stones to fall out unexpectedly.

Apply perfume, oils and hair spray before donning your jewelry. Especially when wearing pearls.  Acidic oils and perspiration can damage the surface of pearls.

Do not leave jewelry in direct sunlight and brilliant lights for extended periods of time.  Any color changes will be permanent.

Do not wear your jewelry in chlorinated water such as pools.  Chlorine is very harmful to gold and delicate stones.

Normal wear and time can weaken the threads that are used to string pearls.  Check periodically for signs of wear and stretching.

Do your own inspection!  Look at each piece carefully - look for missing stones, bends, and worn thin areas.  If you feel that anything deserves attention, take your jewelry to a qualified jeweler for an estimate of the true condition.
