Diamonds - The Four C's

THE FIRST C - COLOR
A diamond color is measured from D-Z. D color is colorless and Z is yellow. We recommend our clients stay above an I color for an exceptional diamond color.

When applied to diamonds, color is often misunderstood by people outside the diamond trade. Many people think of diamonds as colorless. In reality, truly colorless diamonds are quite rare. Most diamonds used in jewelry are nearly colorless with faint yellow or brown tints. These diamonds fall in the normal color range.

GIA D-Z Color Grading Scale

In the D-Z color range, a D color diamond will always be more valuable than other diamonds… all other factors--clarity, carat weight, and cut--being equal of course.

Diamonds outside the normal color range are called fancy-colored and come in about any color you can imagine. Any naturally colored diamond with a noticeable depth of bodycolor considered to be rare or attractive. Red and green are the rarest fancy colors, followed by purple, violet, orange, blue, and pink. Yellow and greenish yellow diamonds are more common. While white, black, and gray are not, strictly speaking, spectral colors, they are also considered fancies. In the GIA color grading system, fancy color grades are described as faint, very light, light, fancy light, fancy, fancy intense, and fancy dark.
